Are You A New Generation Homesteader?

Be prepared to be challenged about how getting ‘back to the old way of living’ is not the way of the future...

There’s a lot of talk about homesteading these days, getting back to the ‘old way of living’, you know ‘the simple life’.

But the question that’s less often asked is who is the “new generation homesteader”?

Some would ask, why do we need to give homesteaders today a new label?

The word “homesteading” has been around for centuries, describing the often harsh lifestyle based around self-sufficiency, subsistence agriculture, food preservation, animal husbandry, crafts and providing for a family's every need.

As with any change over time, the 'new generation homesteader' doesn’t necessarily fit the “old-fashioned” image.

Modern homesteading

Modern homesteading is a lot more diverse than the homesteaders of yesteryear.

Modern Homesteaders come from all walks of life and from all over the world and are not necessarily defined by where they live, but by their lifestyle choices and mindset.

They have the desire to still live a self-sufficient and sustainable lifestyle, and this could be in an urban, suburban, semi-rural or rural setting, growing produce and raising animals.

The growing space can be as small as a pot or a balcony, and range from a suburban house block, anywhere up to hundreds, if not thousands of acres.

What sets the new generation homesteaders apart?

Now here’s where things get interesting ... the contrast between homesteading of the past and the new generation homesteader...

One of the romantic views of homesteading that is portrayed in life, on film and in online forums such as Facebook groups, is the old way of thinking and the belief that the homesteader has to struggle to make ends meet.

The old way is being frugal, scrimping and saving, going without just to lead the lifestyle. It can often feel exhausting and overwhelming.

The new generation homesteader has stepped into the 21st century.

They are tech-savvy individuals that have recognised the value that technology can play in growing their own food, generating their own energy and creating various revenue streams to help fund their homesteading lifestyle.

The new frontier!

The new generation homesteaders are opening up a new frontier, generating income online by sharing their stories, and selling their skills and knowledge – what they know, love and do –and it’s becoming a lucrative business for those who are setting themselves up for success.

There is a plethora of choice to follow homesteaders who are carving out their own niche to bring in income.

This is evidenced when you head online to search for answers to all manner of homesteading related questions on YouTube, podcasts or any social platform.

Ask yourself, how many homesteaders do you follow?

Think about how often you see product referrals or links to buy products?

What ads that come up on their websites or YouTube channels?

Who sponsors their podcast episodes?

It’s about the lifestyle not the money

The focus on bringing in money is often howled down in online homesteading forums, with critics implying these new generation homesteaders are selling their souls by chasing the money.

But how do homesteaders pay the mortgage, fuel and feed bills with inflation on the rise?

It's with curiosity that even some of those who tout the ‘frugal’ way of living have options to purchase products, downloadables, courses and affiliate products they recommend and make money online.

Homesteading is an industry

What you must remember is ... Homesteading is a lucrative industry now.

There are live conferences such as the Modern Homesteading Conference or the Homesteaders of America Homesteading Conference all which sell tickets for guest to see expert speakers who share their knowledge, and stallholders who sell their wares.

There are homesteader websites, podcasters and YouTubers who have clickable links to purchase products and services, and there is a steady stream of itchy fingered buyers willing to pay for the short cut to learning a new skill that save time and money, or buy the swag of their favourite homesteader personality.

The online revenue generating side of homesteading is like the embarrassing old uncle who has no filter and says what he pleases at the family Christmas dinner –nobody is talking about it. And it’s time that we do.

Which would you rather?

Here’s the thing,

If you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed about making ends meet...

Would you rather stick with the traditional, often expensive and time sucking revenue generation ways of growing and selling of seasonal produce, making or crafting products, or raising animals for food or to on sell, with the risk the potential revenue being taken away at the crucial time by predators or weather conditions?

Or

Would you rather embrace this new way of doing things?

The new way of creating a recurring online revenue that gives you the potential of a world wide market.

You profit from what you know, love and do through selling online courses, coaching, product referrals or a membership, where you can have revenue coming in 24/7 while you sleep.

Set it up once so you can have it on autopilot which will give you back your time, enable you to pay your bills and leave a legacy for your family?

Saying “Yes” to the later means you are a new generation homesteader!
